The Story of Blue Pottery of Jaipur

Blue Pottery of Jaipur is a centuries-old craft with roots tracing back to Iran. This exquisite art form journeyed through Central Asia before finding its true home in the royal city of Jaipur. What sets Jaipur Blue Pottery apart from other ceramics around the world is its unique composition—crafted not from traditional clay, but from quartz stone powder, making each piece more vibrant, durable, and distinctive. Entirely handmade, each article takes nearly 20–25 days and passes through over 42 meticulous hand processes before it reaches the hands of a customer.

The craft flourished under the patronage of Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II in the 19th century and saw a major revival in 1963 by Padmashri Kripal Singh Shekhawat, with immense support from cultural patrons like Maharani Gayatri Devi and Kamla Devi Chattopadhyay. In recognition of its uniqueness, Jaipur Blue Pottery was awarded the Geographical Indication (G.I.) tag in 2009.

At the forefront of this heritage today stands Ram Gopal Blue Pottery, established in 1993. Shilp Guru Gopal Saini, a Presidential awardee and one of the most respected figures in the field, has devoted his life to the craft’s preservation and excellence. Now, his daughter Garima Saini continues the legacy—blending tradition with modernity and ensuring the timeless beauty of Jaipur Blue Pottery lives on for generations to come.
